We made a quick decision to head to Kansas City, Missouri for the weekend so Kyle could play in a racquetball tournament and catch up with some high school friends.
The weekend went by in a whirlwind, mainly because most of it was spent watching the hubby play racquetball. But one cannot visit Kansas City without enjoying some barbecue and fountains. We chose to stop at one of the Gates BBQs close to downtown. They have a cafeteria style ordering system that can be a bit intimidating when they yell out in a heavy southern draw, “Can I help you?”. When I stuttered the man in front of me, who was clearly a regular, recommended I ordered the “beef-on-bun with fries”. Well he definitely did not steer me wrong. The beef brisket was very tasty and tender. Kyle got the “long ribs” and was also very happy with his selection. Their BBQ sauces were vinegar based, reminding me of our favorite hometown BBQ joint – mmm, so yummy.
After we stuffed our faces with BBQ, we decided to walk off some calories at the World War I memorial park. There was a beautiful view of the city from the top of the memorial. We also got to see a couple fountains driving around town. It was a pleasant surprise to us that Kansas City seemed to have very little weekend traffic. It made driving around town fairly enjoyable.
When we go back to Kansas City again we’ll be sure to eat BBQ until our hearts are content. And perhaps they’ll have combined their two well known attractions and create a BBQ fountain!! My mouth is already drooling at the idea!
